Info:
"Ireland Dubs" is an ongoing project in which the Whimsical posse pays tribute to one of our favourite music genres: Irish folk music. 8 episodes of this series form 1 season. At the end of a season might or might not come an album compiling all the episodes into one release.
The fourth episode of the first season comes unexpected as it wasn't scheduled for release for January 2025. And not just that: We made 4 versions (2 of those being additional remixes that will be released in February). It just so happened. This dub version was a bit difficult to create, because the original song "The Maid Who Sold Her Barley" has a 6/8 beat. Johnny started working on our dub version in January 2024 and had to put it aside several times, as changing it to a 4 to the 4 steppas beat didn't work out as hoped. At the end, we just left it with a 6/8 beat. The snaredrum hits on the 4 and the chords mostly are on-beat. But who says they have to be off-beat, just because it's a dub remix? After all, we're whimsical at Whimsical Music, so why not.
The original song is an Irish jig from around the 16th century and it's about a maid who is going to town in order to sell her barley. The potential buyer then doesn't just want to buy her barley, but also her. Depending on the version, either just for a one night stand and/or to marry first and then make a baby with her. 'twere different times back then for sure. Luckily, we at Whimsical Music are progressive people and have our urges under control, thus our version is instrumental and up for your own imagination.
